HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY TOOTHBRUSH? – OPTIMAL DENTAL – DR ROMAN LOHYN – COSMETIC AND GENERAL DENTIST – MELBOURNE – VICTORIA
How often should I change my toothbrush?
The lifespan of your toothbrush is approximately 2 – 3 months. For optimal effectiveness and hygiene, change your toothbrush when the bristles start to look ragged, or at the beginning of each season (Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring).
Toothbrushes simply wear out over time. Repetitive use in the morning and night breaks down bristles and results in the inability to effectively reach tricky corners around teeth. Another reason your toothbrush must be changed on a regular basis is because of the build up of bacteria. Your toothbrush may be a breeding ground for germs, fungus and bacterial growths. When toothbrushes are stored close to one another, the build up of bacteria can spread cold and flu viruses between family members. Toothbrushes may also harbour the little bugs that cause cold sores and ulcers. If you are susceptible to ulcers and cold sores it is necessary to change your toothbrush more regularly.
We recommend storing your toothbrush in an upright position, not touching any others. After brushing your teeth, it is also advisable to rinse your toothbrush vigorously under tap water.
Optimal Dental is dedicated to helping you maximise your oral well-being and Dr Roman Lohyn is a strong believer in prevention. Preventive Dental care will help you maintain your natural teeth for life.
